I have 2 Octones, and they are not chaining.

There could be a couple reasons that your Octones are not chaining together properly. Let’s run through these troubleshoots to help isolate and resolve the issue:

1. First, let’s re-run through the chaining process. Confirm that your Octones are properly chained using a 6-pin ribbon cable. Please refer to the illustration below for proper installation.

Once you are properly chained, you must perform the 2 Octone factory reset command in order to chain them together. The reset command is listed below:

  • Hold down RESET and SCALE on both Octones while powering up the modules.

  • Keep holding the RESET and SCALE buttons. The scale selection indicators will flash one-by-one from bottom to top if performed correctly.

  • Once all 12 LEDs are illuminated, release the reset and scale selection buttons on both Octones.

  • The SCALE buttons on both Octones will begin to flash. Press the SCALE button on the primary Octone.

  • Power cycle the Octones once the LED display has finished.

If running through the chain commands did not chain your Octones, then we may have to troubleshoot further.

2. Check and make sure there is no damage to your ribbon cable used to connect the 2 Octones. If there is perceived damage to the cable, it is recommended to swap the cable for a new one. We can provide the cable if necessary, with shipping costs covered by the user. Just specify in your submission form that you are requesting a replacement ribbon cable, and include your mailing address. A shipping invoice will be sent over via PayPal. Once the invoice is fulfilled, we will ship out the replacement cable.

3. Check your PSU and make sure you are with the current consumption limits. In some unique cases, certain power supplies do not power the rails in a timely manner. This can cause the Octones to boot up at miniscule but separate times, preventing them from properly communicating and chaining on boot up. Occasionally switching their ports in the PSU can alleviate this, but other times there is no solution since the power supply circuitry is fixed.
